CFD Research Awarded $50M SBIR Phase III Project for Environment Effects

CFD Research Corporation announced today that it has been awarded a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase III contract from the U.S. Army Contracting Command, for the development of environment analysis tools, models, and test capabilities to characterize weather environment effects on the performance of weapon systems and sensors. The five-year contract has a ceiling value of $49.6 million.

Under this contract, the CFD Research team will evaluate environment and weather effects on weapon systems, sensors, and hypersonic vehicles.  Computational models and solvers will be developed that provide insight into aerodynamics and phenomena that occur during hypersonic flight, such as boundary layer transition and material ablation.  Software models will be validated using laboratory and field tests to ensure that results agree with physical measurements.  Huntsville-based companies Integration Innovation, Inc. (i3) and IERUS Technologies join CFD Research as subcontractors for this award.

“CFD Research and our partners, through this contract, will expand the knowledge base of effects on flight vehicles and sensors and provide critical insight into the design and performance of next-generation weapon systems,” Steve Cayson, CFD Research Chief Operating Officer said.

CFD Research is a well-established small business founded in 1987, with a demonstrated history of exceptional technical performance, innovation, and transition of enabling technologies to government and commercial customers.

“CFD Research is honored to be awarded this SBIR Phase III effort supporting our Aviation & Missile Center customer that builds upon several SBIR Phase I and II technology development contracts,” Sameer Singhal, CFD Research President & CEO said. “This award continues CFD Research’s strategy to develop technologies that impact society by delivering breakthrough solutions that protect our soldiers and defend America.”
